The team is delighted to announce that 2021 'The Vivienne' Denmark Chardonnay was recognised with a score of 96 points and a rare Gold Medal at the 2024 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), achieving the top score for chardonnay.
The IWSC has been running since 1969 with a goal to showcase the world's finest wines and spirits, maintaining a highly rigorous judging standard. All wines are blind-tasted by a panel of expert professionals who are all Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and respected wine buyers, overseen by the IWSC Committee comprised of seven Masters of Wine.
Among thousands of wines submitted for entry, 2021 ‘The Vivienne’ Denmark Chardonnay was awarded a strong Gold Medal and 96 points, sharing the top chardonnay score with two wines from Margaret River. This year's competition saw only 45 Gold Medals awarded to white wines internationally, with just 11 of those coming from Australia. 'The Vivienne' was the only wine from the Great Southern wine region represented in that cohort.
During tasting, the judges singled out ‘The Vivienne’ Denmark Chardonnay for its "finely detailed gun smoke complexity against a backdrop of grapefruit", and were impressed by the balance of fruit density and natural acidity, noting the "fruit concentration sees through to the last acids as they battle it out."
The panel's full tasting notes read: "Smoky and honeyed on the nose, with charming nuances of toasty oak, leading to a compelling mix of gun smoke and grapefruit on the palate. Vibrant fruit concentration is framed by harmonious oak spice and toasty flavours, culminating in a fresh, nutty finish. Remarkably persistent, calling you back for more. Magnificent!"
Named in honour of co-founder Vivienne Snowden, 'The Vivienne' is Singlefile's flagship estate grown chardonnay, and this year we are celebrating its tenth vintage. Following in the footsteps of another significant international award at the 2024 London Wine Competition, we are humbled that this wine has found recognition among such fine company, and delighted to see Great Southern wines viewed so favourably alongside other preeminent wine producing regions on a global scale.
2021 'The Vivienne' Denmark Chardonnay will be released later in 2024.
