With a vibrant maritime township and diverse terroir, Albany provides the ideal conditions for aromatic sauvignon blanc and more — as showcased by Singlefile.
As Western Australia's oldest European settlement, Albany serves as the ultimate gateway to explore the renowned Great Southern wine region. Its unique terroir, shaped by the Southern Ocean, produces wines of exceptional freshness, precision, and complexity.
Officially gazetted as a subregion within the Great Southern in 1999, Albany may have fewer vineyards compared to its neighbours—with less than 1 square kilometre under vine—but its wines are no less distinguished. Representing approximately three per cent of the Great Southern's total vineyard area, Albany’s vineyards are small but significant, producing wines that reflect the region’s unique maritime influence and terroir.
Albany’s terroir is defined by its proximity to the Southern Ocean, which shapes its climate and soil composition. The region’s lateritic, gravelly, and sandy loam soils, interspersed with granite and gneissic rock outcrops, encourage deep root systems that are essential for producing concentrated flavours. Ironstone gravel soils, prevalent on crests and ridges, are particularly notable. These soils, marked by pale sandy topsoils with ferruginous nodules overlying yellow clay, create a well-draining environment that fosters vine health and resilience.
The Southern Ocean’s influence is profound, bringing cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The "Albany Doctor," a cooling sea breeze that arrives each afternoon, moderates temperatures and reduces diurnal variation. This consistent climate encourages steady ripening, ideal for early-ripening varieties like chardonnay and pinot noir, while also supporting later-ripening reds with minimal risk of frost damage. The higher humidity during summer helps reduce vine stress, aiding in the development of delicate, balanced flavours.
For Singlefile, Albany represents a unique opportunity to craft wines that reflect the region’s cool-climate precision and maritime influence.
While it recognises the subregion’s capability in producing a range of exceptional early and later-ripening varieties, for Singlefile, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc are its dependable mainstays from Albany, and a notable inclusion in its Single Vineyard Collection.
"We return to Albany each vintage for its consistently outstanding chardonnay, which is a precise, cool-climate style forming the backbone of our Great Southern Chardonnay," says Patrick Corbett, co-founder and managing director of Singlefile Wines. "The Albany terroir also plays a vital role in shaping our sauvignon blanc, with an ideal balance of fruit flavour, aromatics, and acidity—perfect for the barrel-fermented expression we strive for."
Made in the traditional Bordeaux style of the Pessac-Léognan / Graves subregions, Singlefile Wines’ Single Vineyard Albany Fumé Blanc is a particularly sophisticated expression of sauvignon blanc, showcasing the full potential of Albany’s terroir. The name fumé blanc is widely used to describe sauvignon blanc dominant wines crafted with some oak treatment, adding texture and complexity to this typically light and crisp varietal.
“The Chester Pass vineyard is one of the most southerly vineyard sites in Western Australia,” says Patrick. “The tempering effect of the Southern Ocean creates ideal conditions for slow, even ripening, allowing sauvignon blanc to develop full flavour while retaining its natural acidity—a perfect foundation for the subtle use of oak. This results in a well-balanced, powerful, and age-worthy wine that captures the character of the site.”
Singlefile’s 2024 Single Vineyard Albany Fumé Blanc is significant to the winery as its first Single Vineyard wine from the Albany subregion, and has already garnered critical accolades highlighting the wine’s intensity and complexity of flavour.
Several of Albany’s wineries have also received significant acclaim for its wines, further cementing the region’s reputation for world-class quality. Wignalls Wines, known for its award-winning pinot noir, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, has long occupied its place as a leader in Albany's wine scene. Oranje Tractor Wines is celebrated for its sustainable practices and environmental stewardship as much as its limited batch wines, particularly its expressive riesling.
While Albany is often recognised for its aromatic white varieties, Monty’s Leap, located near the Kalgan River, has gained recognition for its Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This demonstrates the viticultural diversity of the subregion, shaped by its patchwork of distinct microclimates. The success of these expressions is a testament to the subregion’s ability to produce world class cool climate wines with vibrancy and structure.
Albany’s future as a wine region is promising. Its unique combination of maritime climate, diverse soils, and pioneering spirit assures its pivotal role in the Great Southern’s evolution. As consumer tastes shift towards lighter, fresher styles, Albany is well-placed to meet these demands with its sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, and pinot noir. Additionally, the region’s potential for expanding varietals suited to its distinctive climate and soil conditions will further enhance its reputation within the global wine industry.
With a focus on quality and innovation, Albany is poised to continue its rise as a key player in Western Australia’s wine industry, contributing to the Great Southern’s reputation as one of the world’s premier wine regions.
