SMALL BATCH PROJECT: #2

VINEYARD & WINEMAKING

The sauvignon blanc fruit is from the Stoney Crossing vineyard in Pemberton, planted in 1998. It has a north facing aspect and karri loam soils. The fruit was picked on the 6th March 2018. This wine is produced in the traditional style of the Pessac-Léognan in the Graves region of Bordeaux. We select fruit that goes to 100% new oak for five months which adds texture, complexity and subtle spice flavours. It was bottled in August 2018 and bottle aged for a further twelve months before release.

THE WINE

The wine has the typical Sauvignon Blanc varietal notes of grassiness and pea pod while also underlying spice and barrel ferment characters. The mouth feel is textural and rich and has a multitude of layers. This wine shows its best with food and is well suited to complement oven-roasted chicken and vegetable style dishes.

The Small Batch 2018 Fumé Blanc is the big sister to the 2019 Mount Barker Fumé and ups the ante for seriously good Australian fumé blanc. I had to reach for the corkscrew as it is under cork and the bottle glamorously dipped in gold wax. Pale in colour, the wine has honeysuckle, strawberry marshmallow and grassy flavours, which blend seamlessly over a long finish before bright end notes. Made with a little more oak than the Mount Barker, this delivers greater structure, depth and interest to a varietal which can sometimes be a little ’thin.’ I drank it cold and it is a tight, disciplined, elegant wine. With a little temperature it opened up beautifully, delivering those oak notes and a hint of very attractive ripe cantaloupe. This is Fumé that will convince even the most hardened chardonnay fan. A very impressive, enjoyable wine that would pair well with grilled prawns tossed through fresh pasta. This wine will only improve with age and I’d be fascinated to see what is like after 5 years laid down.

Varietal strength of Sauvignon Blanc is tamed without destroying its aromatic crispness; in style more than a match for the best Graves blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon; and more than a match for Te Koko. Great with Thai and other subtle Asian seafood dishes.
