VINEYARD & WINEMAKING

The continental cool climate sub-region of Frankland River sits within the northwest corner of the Great Southern wine region (its latitude 34°39’S). The Riversdale vineyard, planted in 1997 on deep gravel over clay soils, on a north-south orientation, is located 7kms northwest of the Frankland River township.

The winter saw above average rainfall that continued into early spring. Summer was dry and mild with even temperatures throughout February, March and April. This provided perfect conditions to achieve optimal ripeness and the tannin profile required for premium cabernet sauvignon.

The fruit was picked and sorted in late-April 2022. It was cold soaked in a small fermenter for two days before undergoing a gentle and extended maceration. After the fermentation, the wine was left on skins for 18 days. Forty percent of the wine was matured in new Bordeaux oak barriques. The balance went to one-year old (30%) and two-year old (30%) Bordeaux barriques for fourteen months before the wine was then prepared for bottling.

THE WINE

This wine displays complex aromas of blueberry, plum and cassis, with gentle oak support. The wine is effortlessly mouth filling with juicy dark fruit flavours balanced with acidity and gentle fine-grained tannins which lead to a long finish. It is well suited to red meat dishes such as a roast leg of lamb with garlic and herbs.

Firstly, I do not have the appropriate wine knowledge to be reviewing a wine from those who clearly do. I will not articulate this in 'acceptable' wine language, but as you will see from our history, this particular wine just never disappoints. No matter the accompanying meal, no matter the guests, it just is superb. Everyone we share it with asks how to order it, and everyone drinks all of our supplies. Good for you, not good for us! To me, it has depth, it is so smooth and just an absolute joy to drink. Thank you and please maybe stop our subscription, my bank account and liver are struggling!

This wine is, at least at the moment, all about the fruit. Dark fruit on the nose and the palate delivers even more so: cassis/blackcurrant and perhaps even some blueberry. Bright and medium bodied, with fine/smooth tannins and good length.

Little to be seen here in terms of herbaceous or savoury notes just yet, so best matched with cheese or pate/parfait unless you're holding on for the long haul (maybe 10+ years?). But if you love your fruit, there's no need to wait.

This one is a favourite! It has deep berry flavours and smooth tannins that make it a delightful wine on its own. However, it added a new dimension to my dinner and was also very enjoyable with cheese.

This wine was a lovely surprise! Really enjoyed the fruity flavour and it went so well with our cheese platter. Very light and easy to drink! Would definitely recommend!

We enjoyed this bottle with a cheese and patè platter. This has to be one of my favourites. A smooth and full fruity flavor went perfectly with the platter on a cool winters afternoon. Even my husband who doesn’t usually like red had a glass and said he enjoyed it which says a lot about how smooth and drinkable it is!! Loved it ❤️🍷

Citrus-y, spciy aroma. Berry flavours with more tannin than the Cab Merlot, would be well suited to food.

Opened a 2015 from my cellar tonight which I purchased early 2018. Really well developed with an eveness of spice and tanin. A pepper taste at first, white pepper with a combination of sharp stone fruit - maybe a well matured plum. Just the perfect wine to savour, to feel satisfied, to relax and listen to the world around.

This is a review of the 2017 vintage of this wine. Whilst I could try and mention its lovely mouthfeel, its gorgeous deep red (nearly port) colouring and its tendency for berries and the start of some serious tannin development, I just wanted to say I love it for a Saturday night share with my wife. Thank you, John

After enjoying this for the very first time I remarked to my friends, that if I was a red I would want to be this red. Drop dead gorgeous.

I don't usually drink red but after tasting this and then with the matching chocolate, I think I found a new favorite. It was so smooth and I could taste the berry flavours.

Vintage 2021 Date tasted: 4/11/23 Nice deep violet colour with earthy aromas of plum and berries. Fine tannins from the oak with balanced acidity and excellent length. Drinking very nicely now but would benefit from a few years in the cellar.
