Singlefile’s Newest Experience: Cool-Climate Chardonnay Masterclass

Chardonnay holds a special place in our hearts at Singlefile, having been a cornerstone of our winemaking journey since 2008. Grown on our estate vineyard, chardonnay is prized for its ability to convey a true sense of place, while offering the unique potential to be moulded by the hand of the winemaker, perhaps more than any other variety.

A much loved grape, chardonnay thrives in the Great Southern, with a wide range of expressions crafted to suit every palate — from light, crisp and fruit-focused examples, to the complex, buttery styles which tip their hats to the chardonnays of old.

“We created the Cool-Climate Chardonnay Masterclass to showcase the depth and diversity of this grape, inviting guests to explore the full spectrum of the fruit’s potential, and its significance to Singlefile,” Singlefile’s Cellar Door manager, Ian, explains.

“As a hero variety of the Great Southern, and one which is especially important to the Singlefile family, we are proud to showcase premium, cool-climate chardonnay in a variety of styles across each of our wine collections. Our Chardonnay Masterclass allows each of these wines their chance to shine, while we delve into the terroir, winemaking techniques and story behind each bottle.”

Read on to discover what you can expect in our newest Cellar Door experience.

Exploring the Influence of Terroir

Beginning among the vines on our estate vineyard, your Singlefile host will discuss the concept of terroir and explore how the soil, climate, and landscape of the Great Southern region contribute to the unique characteristics of our chardonnays.

Here, you’ll delve into the specific qualities and flavours typical of fine cool-climate chardonnay, and how these elements translate into the final wine. You’ll also have the chance to sip on fresh chardonnay grape juice in its purest form, before it is transformed during the winemaking process.

From Vineyard to Glass

Back at our Cellar Door, enjoy a generous wine flight comprising all five Singlefile chardonnays, including Limited Release ‘The Vivienne’ Denmark Chardonnay, usually exclusively reserved for our Collector and Appreciator Wine Club members.

During your tasting, your Singlefile host will guide you through the different stages of the chardonnay winemaking process, from grape selection and picking decisions to fermentation techniques and barrel ageing. You'll learn how each decision, big or small, contributes to the wine’s final flavour profile; and discover the secondary flavours that make cool-climate chardonnay so beautifully complex.

Continuing the Tasting Experience

To finish the experience, your host will pour you a full glass of your favourite chardonnay from the tasting to enjoy as you relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. You’ll also walk away with a printed selection of our team’s favourite recipes to pair with chardonnay, so you can continue your tasting journey at home.

Whether you’re a long-time chardonnay lover, or want to discover more about this noble variety, our Chardonnay Masterclass offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the intricate journey from grape to glass. We look forward to hosting you soon.
