Mention Denmark to most people and their cultural signposts will be coloured in white, with Nordic design edges and Scandinavian street chic. But for us, at Singlefile, Denmark is our West Australian home. It may be a world away from its Scandinavian sister in the north, but it’s no less appealing with its myriad tourist attractions and breath-taking natural landscapes. Where else in the world do towering karri trees meet sandy white beaches in a juxtaposition of the senses? Denmark is that union of green and blue, where forest and ocean are neighbours and Mother Nature’s artistry is on show everywhere you look.

• Be inspired by the creativity of Denmark by cruising through the local galleries that specialise in timber and glass pieces, paintings, drawings and jewellery. Like many Australian villages, Denmark attracts creative spirits with artistic flair by the bucket load. From the mixed media works at Butter Factory Studio and the intricate jewellery designs by Todd Moore at Ulyquin Jewellery to the ceramic artist Jonathon Hook and stunning paintings by local artist Michael Cartwright, Denmark’s art scene is alive and kicking with glorious visual treats.

• Denmark’s wine industry is boosted by fantastic producers such as Singlefile, the likes of which are matched by the brilliant foodies on the map. Passionate producers, local cooks and seasonal produce all come together to create a colourful array of dining options that rival the best in our country. The gastronomy of the region is showcased at the annual Taste Great Southern festival every February and March.

• But first things first – coffee. In Denmark it happens at Ravens where the beans are roasted on premise and the breakfasts are hearty and made with a “raw” sensibility. For lunch head to Mrs Jones Café. The crumbed chicken and avocado baguette will hit the spot. No visit to Denmark is complete without a stop at Dark Side Chocolates. John Wade is winemaker turned chocolatier – he believes these crafts have a lot in common. Great flavour sensations are certainly there when you try one of his creations.

• Denmark’s striking landscape is best viewed by dropping in to its hotspots along on the tourist trail. Visit Denmark Dinosaur World and Parrot Jungle to discover birds and reptiles that have been roaming the earth for millions of years. Or the Denmark Animal Farm and Pentland Alpaca Stud where you can get up close and personal with the wildlife. Near Walpole, soar above the crowds by doing the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk. The lightweight suspension bridge lifts you 40 metres above ground where you can make friends with the 400-year-old tingle trees. Or jump in your car and take the Scotsdale Tourist Drive, which follows the route of the old timber cutting days, then head to William Bay National Park whose seascapes will leave you breathless, just like the temperature of the water in its tranquil Greens Pool where you can snorkel, dive or frolic in the beauty of the calm turquoise waters. Hang on, are they elephants at the water’s edge or just weathered rocks that look like a herd of these giant beasts? They are in fact a collection of super smooth Elephant Rocks, sitting in Elephant Cove, one of the most visited locations in Denmark.

• The Great Southern is hiding so many hidden treasures in our cheeky Western Australian locale. And Denmark is just one of them. It’s a spot that ticks all the boxes on the tourism bucket list but without the flashy pretension of other holiday destinations. So make Denmark your base and satisfy your wanderlust by tripping around this southern tip of our country to discover the beauty of all these amazing sub-regional spots, from Frankland River and the Porongurups to Albany and Mount Barker.
