Champion Denmark wines rake in the medals

It was a wine lover's nirvana at the 31st Annual Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia’s tasting day held in Mt Barker recently as over 200 exhibitors from WA showcased wines from 41 categories ranging from Dry White Sauvignon Blanc to Sweet Red Fortified Wine. This prestigious event is on every wine buff and wine maker’s calendar, and the judging panel was headed by the renowned James Halliday.

Whilst Singlefile Wines did not enter its premium wine for this year’s event, the Denmark region was represented by 12 exhibitors, nearly all of whom received at least one medal, highlighting the champion-style of wine making from this region. Medal winning red varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo with the winning whites being Chardonnay, Riesling and blends of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

This year’s Denmark vintage attracted 13 medals in total, with nine medals going to 2007 wines and the remaining awarded to vintages ranging from 2002 to 2006.

Racy reds winning gold and silver

A relatively new red varietal for Western Australia, which bagged a silver medal for West Cape Howe is its 2007 Tempranillo, a firm favourite with the locals.

And keep your eye out for other red wine winners from the Denmark region which include Harewood Estate’s gold medal win with its 2005 Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend and Forest Hill Vineyard’s 2006 Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend.

Whites with the gold

Cool climate white wines such as Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are highly acclaimed in the Denmark region where they are characterised by excellent fruit flavour.  Again Denmark wineries bought home the goods with gold medal winners for white wines coming from Forest Hill Vineyard for its 2006 Chardonnay, Harewood Estate’s 2007 Riesling and Howard Park Wines with its 2008 Riesling and 2008 Sauvignon Blanc.

New kids on the block

While the established wineries continued to collect gold, silver and bronze, it was good to see some newer labels from the Denmark region enjoying early success at the wine show.  The Lake House, Whitfields Estate and Hamlet Vineyard celebrated bronze medal winning wines after just a few years of wine production.

The results from this year’s Qantas Wine Show of WA prove that the Denmark region is producing some of the best red and white wines in WA.

Singlefile Wines congratulates all the Denmark region participants and looks forward to entering its wines in next years event.
