Why We Love Riesling

Western Australia’s Great Southern region is famous for its Riesling – and with good reason. It’s because Riesling is all about the vineyard and the terroir, both of which are almost perfectly suited for the grape variety.

As winemakers, we try not to influence the final wine and just let the natural flavours shine through. Perhaps this is why Riesling is the wine winemakers love to drink!

We are proud to see Great Southern’s Porongurup, Frankland River and Mount Barker subregions being more renowned as premium Riesling regions, both nationally and internationally.  All of these regions are showcased in Singlefile’s Rieslings, so this quality is pronounced in the final drop too.

Discover the Variety

Riesling speaks volumes of its highly accredited origin and also has the ability to be saved and enjoyed in years to come. The high levels of acidity and perky fruit characters provide the perfect structure for cellaring. Aging with grace, the fruit characters of lemon and lime and floral notes develop richer honey, nutty, toffee-like characters as they mature.

Riesling continues to be rediscovered by savvy Australian drinkers, as they delight in the enjoyment of its subtle flavours. It has almost totally shaken off its 1970s sweet wine label with winemakers now focusing on creating fresh, vibrant styles that have changed consumer perceptions of the style.

Another reason this variety is growing in popularity is that it is a perfect match with the lighter foods now enjoyed by Australians. We’re eating greener and healthier foods such salads, pasta and seafood – and they all drink perfectly with wines displaying clean, vibrant fruit flavours found in a sublimely flavoured, intense and refreshing Riesling.

Our Rieslings

Singlefile’s 2017 Run Free Riesling was picked in pristine conditions in March 2017. Selected parcels of fruit delivered excellent growing conditions with winter and spring being reasonably dry, but with well-timed rainfall. Bottled in August 2017, this wine shows a lifted bouquet of floral notes and green apple. The palate displays a crisp flavoursome style with subtle minerality and a clean, fresh finish.

Singlefile’s 2018 Great Southern Riesling was bottled in July 2018 after an excellent growing season. The colour is light with a green tinge, the aromatics displaying apple blossom and lime tones. The palate shows a softly textured, crisp style with subtle mineral undertones and a tight, crisp finish. It is anticipated this wine will develop a stone-lime minerality and poached citrus richness over time while retaining its linear acidity.

Singlefile’s 2018 Single Vineyard Mount Barker Riesling is sourced from The Blue Lake vineyard, an established dry grown vineyard with 30-year-old vines, on the south-west plains of the Mount Barker subregion. This remarkable wine has a light colour and the aromatics display a combination of citrus flavours, especially lemon and lime. The palate is characterised by the acidic drive of the wine. A dry Riesling, the wine displays intense lime flavours with subtle minerality (which will develop further with age). The wine has a long finish with a lingering acidity.

So, now all you need to do is choose your favourite Riesling from our offerings – shall it be the Single Vineyard, or the Run Free Riesling? Or perhaps the Great Southern Riesling? Try them all and find your favourite.
